Why should Christians help the poor?

In a world where self-interest seems to dominate most things, the call to help others in need vibrates as a core tenet of the Christian faith. Helping poor and marginalized people has been the concern that Scripture stresses throughout, trying to present a compassionate God who seeks justice and mercy. Christians are not only encouraged but even commanded to take care of the least of them, which is reflected in the actions of love through Christ.

Helping the poor has deep roots in Scripture. This is why Proverbs 19:17 says, "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done." It underscores that serving the poor is not only a moral duty but a way of honoring God. Caring for the needy puts a Christian in step with the heart of God, who has shown special concern for the most vulnerable. Jesus calls His followers to live a life of compassion and generosity in the New Testament. He says, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.", Matthew 25:40.

The light that shines from this earth should reflect the love and grace of Jesus in and through Christians. Service to the poor manifests that love in real ways, offering hope and dignity to those who may have been forgotten. As James 2:15-17 says, "Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." This passage strengthens that faith should be active. True belief in God will, by necessity, propel believers to act and answer the needs of others.

Helping the poor is not only a blessing to the poor but also to the giver. Proverbs 22:9 says, "The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." Through generosity, Christians experience joy, fulfillment, and a deeper connection with God; giving them an avenue in which they can participate in God's work and show His love and provision.
